L-Caine Parenteral-Local
L-Caine parenteral-local or L-Cain is a local anesthetic. It is considered a “parenteral local” anesthetic because it affects the area where it is injected i.e. the “local” area. The site where it is injected becomes numb and the patient experiences a loss of feeling. It is often used in different medical procedures.
When is L-Caine Parenteral-Local Used?
This type of anesthetics, the parenteral locals, are important since they can be used in patients who require procedures that necessitate numbness at the site of the procedure. L-Caine is used in medical procedures such as dental surgeries where it is administered where a tooth is to be extracted or filled, effectively numbing the nerves. This allows the dental surgeon to remove the tooth or fill the tooth without causing pain to the patient. L-Caine is also used in women who have experienced vaginal tears after a delivering a baby vaginally. The doctor will administer the anesthetic locally to the tissue before stitching the tear. The use of the medication makes the patient perceive the procedure as painless which is important for a patient’s health and recovery
What are the Advantages to Using L-Caine?
The main advantage of using L-Caine Parenteral-Local is that it can be administered locally, avoiding the use of general anesthesia. General anesthesia should be avoided as it carries a fair amount of risk to a patient’s health and requires a longer recovery period. When L-caine is used, the patient only has to wait until the medication wears off before they can return to normal activities. This is especially true in medical procedures that are non invasive such as oral surgeries.
Who Can Administer L-Caine Parenteral-Local
This medication is administered under the medical supervision of doctor or a dentist. It can also be prescribed by a specially trained health nurse. It is used in the hospital settings or in the dentist’s office.
Risks of Using L-Caine
Before the medical patient is administered any medication, the doctor or dentist will access the possibility of associated health risks. For example, a patient who has allergies to certain anesthetics or epinephrine may not be good candidate for L-Caine. Also, patients with allergies to sulfites and any other preservatives that are used in medications should also let their medical doctor or dentist know of their allergic reactions to avoid any unexpected allergic reactions.
Pregnant women who opt to use L-Caine during labor to ease their labor pain should also be made aware of the associated risks. These kinds of medications may slow down labor; lengthening the time a woman spends in active labor. However, this class of medications are not known to cause birth defects in the growing fetus and may or may not affect the health of the unborn baby.
Children and the elderly are more prone to negative health effects after being administered L-Cain.
Other risks associated with L-Caine are drug interaction related. It is important to let the presiding medical doctor, dentist or nurse about medications that are taken. This is especially true for some blood pressure medications, allergy medications, heart medications, medications for depression and any type of street drugs. The drug interactions may cause decreased or increased heart rates, altered blood pressure or may even alter the desired effect of the medication being taken or may cause L-Caine to be ineffective inadvertently endangering the patient’s health.
Some health conditions may cause the medication to be ineffective or may worse yet complicate the medical condition that the medication is being taken for. This is true in people suffering asthma, brain related ailments like tumors or infections, blood clotting disorders, diabetics, cardiovascular diseases, blood pressure issues, thyroid disorders, kidney and liver disease.
Take Proper Precautions While Using L-Caine
The medication when used properly causes numbness to the injected area. A patient experiencing numbness may injure themselves. This is especially true when L-Caine is used during a dental procedure. A patient feeling numbness in their cheek or tongue may bite their tongue or cheek. This injury will only be apparent after the medication has worn off. Patients should be warned about this self inflicted health injury and be told exercise caution until the medication wears off.
L-Caine is a commonly used medication. Its use can benefit a person’s health by avoiding the use of general anesthesia for simple medical procedures. There are few side effects associated with its use but if any are felt it is important to let the medical doctor know.
